Sewing Levels at MADE

Growth in pottery is not linear. Many students repeat levels, and that is completely normal. Progress is about balancing comfort with healthy challenge, not moving through levels quickly.


Sewing: Introductory

I am ready for an Introductory Sewing experience when:

  • I have never used a sewing machine or need a full refresher

  • I feel unsure where to start

  • I want a clear, guided introduction

  • I want to understand the basics before taking on more complex projects

Terms and concepts I am becoming familiar with:

  •  Backstitching

  • Seam allowance

  • Straight and curved stitching

  • Pressing

  • Zigzag stitch

  • Hem

  • Pinning

  • Right sides together

  • Threading a machine

What success looks like: I feel less intimidated by sewing and more comfortable using a sewing machine


Sewing: Level 1

I am ready for Level 1 Sewing when I:

  • Can thread a machine and sew straight seams

  •  Have basic familiarity with sewing tools and terminology such as what is listed in introductory

  • Want repetition and guided instruction

  • Am ready to follow a simple pattern

I might remain in Level 1 if:

  • I struggle with seam consistency

  • I feel unsure reading patterns

  • I rely heavily on step by step direction

Terms and concepts I may become familiar with:

  • Pattern pieces and markings

  • Seam allowance consistency

  • Cutting fabric accurately

  • Following a pattern (layout and sequence)

  • Basic assembly order

  • Basic notions and closures such as buttons

  • Pressing throughout construction

What success looks like:
I feel excited to keep making and trying new projects


Sewing: Level 2

I am ready for Level 2 Sewing when:

  •  I have completed a Level 1 project or similar work

  • I feel comfortable using a sewing machine independently

  • I can follow a pattern with minimal support

  • I want to learn more advanced construction techniques

  • I am ready to build more complex or structured projects

Terms and concepts I may become familiar with:

  • Zippers

  • Lining and clean interior finishes

  • Interfacing

  • Bias tape or binding

  • French seams or other finished edges

  • Basic patchwork and quilting construction

What success looks like:
I feel ready to show up and work without step by step direction


Sewing: Level 3

I am ready for Level 3 Sewing when:

  • I have completed multiple projects independently

  • I feel confident reading and adapting patterns

  • I manage multi-step construction without assistance

  • I want to focus on more advanced techniques or design decisions

  • I am interested in more complex or custom projects

Terms and concepts I may become familiar with:

  • Pattern adjustments and modifications

  • Multi-piece construction

  • Specialty fabrics and handling techniques

  • Layered and structured builds

  • Advanced finishing techniques

What success looks like:
I feel ownership over my process and can take on complex projects independently
