Preparing for your Level 3 Wheel Series experience
We’re so excited to have you in the studio. Level 3 Wheel is designed for students who are ready to take ownership of their process and focus on refinement, complexity, and intention in their work.
At this stage, you likely have a rhythm at the wheel. This series is about building on that foundation—pushing scale, exploring more complex forms, and making more deliberate decisions from start to finish.
What to Bring
Just yourself. We provide clay, tools, and all materials needed for class.
Aprons and towels are available, and you’re welcome to bring your own tools if you prefer.
What to Expect
Level 3 is less about step-by-step instruction and more about guided refinement. Demonstrations will support specific techniques, but much of your time will be spent working through your own forms with instructor feedback.
Week 1-2
In sets, you will focus on repetition and consistency, working toward cohesive groups of forms that relate to one another in scale and shape.
Week 3-4
In lids and spouts, you will concentrate on fit and function, developing forms that work together as complete, intentional pieces.
Week 5-6
In larger forms, you will work with increased clay weight and build strategies for throwing taller, more ambitious work.
Week 6-8
Glazing
You’ll be encouraged to take more ownership over your workflow—from how you prepare your clay to how you approach finishing and glazing. We may even invite you to bring in a few of your favorite pots from home—even if you didn’t make them—so we can start to break down what makes them great.
Some pieces may still not make it. At this level, the goal is understanding why and adjusting your process with intention.
Your Work
Finished work will be ready for pickup after the final firing and glazing process.
Open Sessions
This series includes open sessions for continued practice and development outside of class time. Open sessions are self-guided and do not include instruction, but staff are available for general support. Your instructor will share more details during your first week.
A Few Helpful Tips
Come a few minutes early to get settled. For the first class, we’ll gather in the shop and head back to the studio together.
Be patient with your process—complex work takes time.
Come in with ideas, and be open to where they evolve.
