Preparing for your Intro to Clay experience

Preparing for Intro to Clay

We’re so excited to have you in the studio. This class is designed as a full introduction to working with clay—both on the wheel and through handbuilding—so no prior experience is needed.

What to Wear

  • Clay washes out of most clothing, but we recommend wearing something you don’t mind getting a little messy.

  • Closed-toe shoes are encouraged.

  • Shorter nails are helpful, especially for wheel work.

What to Bring
Just yourself. We provide clay, tools, and all materials needed for class. Aprons and towels are available, but you’re welcome to bring your own.

What to Expect
This series is all about learning the process. You’ll spend time both on the wheel and exploring handbuilding techniques, building skills week by week.

Working with clay takes practice. Some things may not go as planned at first—and that’s part of it. This class is designed to give you the space to try, learn, and build confidence across different methods.

Your Work
You’ll create a range of pieces throughout the series, learning how to shape, refine, and glaze your work as part of the full ceramic process.

Because ceramics is a multi-step process, pieces may develop small imperfections or, in some cases, not make it through firing. This is a normal part of working with clay.

Finished work will be ready for pickup after the final firing and glazing process.

A Few Helpful Tips

  • Come a few minutes early to get settled. For the first class, we’ll gather in the shop and head back to the studio together.

  • Stay hydrated—working with clay can be more physical than it looks.

  • Give yourself permission to be new at this.
