Clay Levels at MADE
Growth in pottery is not linear. Many students repeat levels, and that is completely normal. Progress is about balancing comfort with healthy challenge, not moving through levels quickly.
Wheel: Introductory
I am ready for Introductory Wheel Series when:
I am new to clay.
I feel unsure about terminology or process.
I want clear weekly structure.
I want to understand how pottery works from start to finish.
What Success Looks Like: I feel less intimidated by clay.
Wheel: Level 1
Level 1 is also a place to start. I do not need to take an introductory series first.
I am ready for Level 1 Wheel Series when I:
I want a longer, steady learning rhythm.
I am new but prefer an extended experience.
I want repetition and guided instruction.
I am excited to practice and build familiarity.
I might remain in Level 1 if:
Centering feels inconsistent.
Pieces collapse frequently.
Trimming rarely goes as planned.
What Success Looks Like: I feel excited to keep practicing.
Wheel: Level 2
I am ready for Level 2 Wheel Series when:
I can throw about a 6-inch cylinder using 1 to 1.5 pounds of clay.
I can center confidently without frequent collapse.
I understand the basic ceramic workflow.
I can intentionally trim simple foot rings.
I feel comfortable working in a shared studio.
I want to refine my forms and make more intentional choices.
What Success Looks Like: I feel ready to show up without step-by-step direction.
Wheel: Level 3
I am ready for Level 3 Wheel Series when:
I can comfortably center more than 4 pounds.
I repeat forms with consistency.
I can explain my trimming decisions.
I manage my workflow independently.
I want to focus deeply on a specific skill area.
What Success Looks Like: I feel ownership over my process and may even have a side hustle selling pots
